Secure Your Organization
Before It's Too Late

10 Steps to a More Secure Workplace

Provided by:

Completing these tasks are the first steps in making your organization secure. All organizations should take these steps to prevent terrorist and hacker attacks.

Install anti-virus software with up-to-date virus definitions on each workstation.
A corporate version is usually the best/only way to make sure definitions stay up-to-date.
Upgrade all workstations to Windows XP Professional.
Make sure all critical updates and service packs have been installed.  The only practical way to make sure all critical updates are applied timely is to use Microsoft Software Update Services (which is not the same thing as having each user periodically go to the Windows Update website).
Implement Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA).
Make sure all current Service Packs and Security Updates are applied.  Also implement GFI Download Security for ISA Server.
Implement Microsoft Exchange 2003 and require its use for all business related email.
Make sure all current Service Packs and Security Updates are applied.  Also implement GFI Mail Security for Exchange.
Upgrade all workstations to Microsoft Office 2003 (especially Outlook 2003) and require its use for all email.
Make sure all current service packs and security updates are consistently applied.
Get rid of your Windows NT Servers.
Upgrade all servers to Microsoft Windows 2003 Server.  Implement Active Directory.  Harden the servers using up-to-date checklists.
Make sure all of your database servers have the latest service pack installed.
For Microsoft SQL Server, the latest service pack is SP3a (if you have applied SP3 there is no reason to apply SP3a).
Use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
If you host your own web site, use Microsoft IIS Lockdown.
Implement secure and proper password policies.
